It has been a very long wait for the Indians at the Olympics, just for winning their first individual gold medal. It was like a dream come true for the whole nation. Mr. Abhinav Bindra has won the 10 metres air rifle event on Monday morning at the Beijing Olympics giving India its first gold medal, not just at the Beijing but in the pages of history as well. It might prove to be the stepping stone for future is what all the media is shouting from their roof-tops.
But considering the population of over 100 crores, considering the fact that India isn't an underdeveloped country, considering the fact that there were more than 50 athletes in the Olympics team of India, earning just a gold medal or a silver or a bronze is not enough, is just not enough. I am not belittiling Mr. Bindra for his tremendous achievement but I am urging for more, just more than one or two medals.
We need not ask for all the athletes to come back home only with medals, but atleast give a tough fight, rather than losing in a pitiful way just in the first round itself. The media which praises for just one medal and thrashes the players for not winning has a lot of responsibility when it comes to highlighting the woes of the athletes when they are training for the olympics. Though there is a lot being spent in the name of sports but how much of it is being spent in the right way and how much of it is fruitful to the athletes. Just think once and act a thousand times, for the betterment of our country's position in the world charts, in all the fields.
Ofcourse, I would be over the moon to congratulate Mr. Abhinav Bindra for his tremendous achievement of winning the first-ever Individual Gold for India in the Olympics....
